Is Bryant the same as Carrier?
Bryant and Carrier come from the same company. Both are Carrier Global brands, and their furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps largely share engineering, platforms and many components. If you have one quote for a Bryant Evolution furnace and another for a Carrier Infinity furnace, you are mostly comparing two contractors and two sets of warranty paperwork, not two different machines. What follows covers what actually differs.
Same parent, parallel lineups
Each brand runs three lines that map onto each other:
- Top: Bryant Evolution and Carrier Infinity. Variable-speed, communicating equipment, including each brand's modulating furnace and cold-climate heat pump.
- Middle: Bryant Preferred and Carrier Performance. Two-stage and single-stage equipment, with some variable-speed heat pumps.
- Value: Bryant Legacy Line and Carrier Comfort. Single-stage furnaces and outdoor units.
At the top, the pairs are close matches. Bryant's Evolution 98 Variable-Speed Modulating furnace sits across from Carrier's Infinity 98. Bryant's Evolution Extreme 21 Variable-Speed Cold Climate Heat Pump sits across from Carrier's Infinity 21 Ultimate Cold Climate Heat Pump. Model numbers differ, so check the spec sheets for the exact sizes you are quoted rather than assuming they match. Do Bryant and Carrier use different wall controls?
At the communicating tier, each brand has its own wall control. Bryant's is the Evolution Connex System Control. Carrier's is the Infinity System Control. Both run the same kinds of features: staging, humidity control, zoning and app access. Plan on keeping the control brand matched to the equipment if you buy at that level.
Below the top tier, most Preferred, Performance, Legacy and Comfort equipment runs on standard thermostats, including smart thermostats from other makers, as long as the thermostat supports the staging.
Warranty terms: the clearest difference
This is where the two badges genuinely part ways. Both require registration within 90 days of installation for the longer coverage, and both fall back to 5 years if you miss it.
- Carrier uses its Consumer Choice warranty. At registration, you pick 10 years of parts coverage, or 5 years of parts plus 3 years of labor.
- Bryant gives 10 years of parts coverage, and select Evolution products add the Bryant Red Shield Unit Replacement Limited Warranty. If a major component like the compressor, evaporator coil or heat exchanger fails from a defect within 10 years, Bryant provides a one-time replacement with a comparable Bryant unit.
Which is worth more depends on you. A unit replacement protects you against the big failure. A labor option protects you against the cost of smaller repairs early on. Neither pays for labor over the full 10 years, which is one reason our installs carry a 2-year labor warranty on top of the manufacturer's coverage.
Do Bryant and Carrier sell through different dealers?
Each brand has its own dealer network, and a contractor usually sells one badge or the other. That is the main reason you see both names in the same neighborhood. Price differences between a Bryant quote and a Carrier quote come mostly from the contractor, the tier and the scope of work: the coil, the venting, the thermostat, the permit. Do not assume either badge is the cheaper one; compare the quotes line by line.
What decides Bryant vs Carrier in a Minnesota home?
Since the hardware is so close, the decision really rests on the install. A modulating Evolution or Infinity furnace sized from a Manual J load calculation, piped with proper condensing venting and set up with correct airflow will run long, quiet cycles through a January cold snap. The same furnace oversized and rushed in will short-cycle on either badge. Outside town gas lines, in farm country and lake areas, the same logic applies to propane. Gas furnaces from either brand are normally converted to propane with the manufacturer's kit at install, and the venting and sizing work is identical.
