Modern cold-climate heat pumps (CCHPs) from Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Trane XV, Carrier Infinity, and Lennox SL series hold rated heating capacity down to roughly -15°F using variable-speed inverter compressors and enhanced vapor injection. That covers about 97% of Twin Cities winter hours from a heat pump alone — and the remaining 3% gets handled by an automatic dual-fuel backup.
For most metro homes, the right answer pairs a CCHP with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles shoulder seasons and most of winter; the furnace takes over below a switchover temperature (typically 5–15°F) set by your installer based on current Xcel electric and CenterPoint gas rates. You never lose heat, and you capture the heat pump's 2–3× efficiency for 80–90% of winter hours.
Xcel Energy and CenterPoint heat-pump rebates run $400–$2,000 on qualifying installs. Stack the federal 25C tax credit (up to $2,000) on top for CCHP systems meeting the CEE Cold Climate spec. We file the utility paperwork and give you the AHRI certificate and Manufacturer's Certification Statement for tax time.

We run Manual J for both heating and cooling, then plot the heat pump's capacity curve against outdoor temperature to set the dual-fuel balance point — typically 5 to 15 °F in Minnesota.
We spec a NEEP-listed cold-climate model with documented capacity at 5 °F and -15 °F, not just AHRI ratings at 47 °F.
