Each range covers the equipment, installation labor, the permit and hauling away the old unit. Where your job lands depends on the efficiency tier, the size the load calculation calls for, and what the house needs around the equipment: venting changes on a furnace conversion, a new pad or line set for an air conditioner, electrical work for a heat pump. You get the number in writing after we've seen the house.

Going from an 80% to a condensing furnace usually means new PVC venting, and it can leave a gas water heater alone in an oversized chimney that then needs a liner. Both show up as line items on the quote. More in the AFUE guide and the furnace replacement cost guide.

What moves an installed price

  • Size: a Manual J load calculation sets it, not the old nameplate. A right-sized system can cost less than a copy of an oversized one.
  • Efficiency and staging: single-stage, two-stage or modulating furnaces; single-stage or variable-speed AC and heat pumps.
  • Venting and drains: PVC runs, chimney liners and condensate drains or pumps.
  • Outdoor work: a new pad, a new or flushed line set, a longer run to the condenser, or association rules on where it can sit.
  • Electrical: a new circuit or disconnect, or panel capacity for a heat pump or electric backup heat.
  • Ductwork: an undersized return or a missing upstairs return is often the real comfort problem, and it's cheaper to fix during a replacement.

How are HVAC repairs priced?

Repairs are quoted flat-rate after the $79 trip charge, before any work starts. The price covers the part and the labor to install it, and it doesn't change if the job takes longer than expected. Approve the repair and the trip charge comes off the bill.

What's included in an installed price?

  • A visit to see the house, and a Manual J load calculation to size the new system.
  • A written flat-rate quote before anything is ordered.
  • The equipment, installation labor and the mechanical permit.
  • Removal and disposal of the old equipment, including refrigerant recovery on air conditioners and heat pumps.
  • Start-up and testing of the new system.
  • Our 2-year labor warranty, on top of the manufacturer's parts warranty, and a note of which registrations to finish.

What warranty comes with a repair or install?

  • Repairs: written 1-year parts and labor warranty.
  • Installs: 2-year labor warranty from us, on top of the manufacturer's parts warranty.
  • Manufacturer parts warranties usually need online registration soon after the install. We'll tell you which ones apply.

Do you offer maintenance plans?

Maintenance plans are available on request. A plan puts your furnace and air conditioner on a regular tune-up schedule so the checks happen before the heating and cooling seasons instead of after something fails. Ask about a plan when you call 612-429-3465 or book a tune-up; we'll walk you through what it covers for your equipment.

Can rebates lower the price of a new system?

Utility rebates can take a real bite out of a new furnace, heat pump or air conditioner, but the programs change every year and some require a registered contractor. We'll tell you which programs apply to the equipment you're considering and help with the paperwork where the program allows it. Check the current terms with your utility before you buy. How can you pay, and is financing available?

We take cash, checks and credit cards. Financing is available on replacement systems; ask about current options when we quote the job.

Do prices change from town to town?

How much does it cost to have a technician look at my furnace or AC?

A service call is a $79 trip charge. The technician finds the problem and gives you a written, flat-rate price for the repair before doing any work. If you approve the repair, the $79 is waived. If you decide not to go ahead, the $79 is all you owe. The price is the same in every town we serve.

Do you charge more for towns farther from the Twin Cities?

No. A service call in Red Wing, Monticello or Hudson carries the same $79 trip charge as one in Minneapolis, waived when you approve the repair, and there's no mileage fee added for distance. Tune-ups and repairs are priced the same way everywhere we go, in Minnesota and in Western Wisconsin. The full list of towns is on our service areas page.

How much is a furnace or AC tune-up?

A furnace tune-up or an AC tune-up starts at $129. If you want both done in one visit, the combined furnace and AC tune-up is $219. Maintenance visits generally run $129–$349, depending on the equipment and what's attached to it. A boiler or a system with a humidifier and air cleaner takes more time than a basic furnace. What forms of payment do you take?

We take cash, checks and credit cards. Financing is available on new installs, which helps when a furnace quits in January and a replacement wasn't in this year's budget. We don't list financing rates or terms on the site. Ask about them when we give you the written quote for the install, and compare them against paying another way.

Will I know the price before the work starts?

Yes. For repairs, the technician gives you a flat-rate price in writing after the diagnosis and before touching anything, and nothing happens until you approve it. Because the price is flat-rate, a repair that takes longer than expected doesn't cost you more. For replacements, you get a written quote based on a Manual J load calculation for your house.
