Winter humidity that doesn't fog the windows

Twin Cities indoor air drops to 10–15% RH in January — dry sinuses, static shocks, cracked trim. A whole-home Aprilaire steam or bypass humidifier brings the house to a 35–40% setpoint without overshooting and condensing on cold window glass. We size to your blower CFM and water hardness so the unit doesn't scale out in two seasons.

Real filtration, not a 1-inch pleated upgrade

A 4-inch or 5-inch media filter (MERV 11–13) lasts 6–12 months, captures pollen and pet dander, and doesn't choke the blower the way a high-MERV 1-inch filter does. For allergy-sensitive households we add a bypass HEPA or UV-C lamp on the coil.

HRV and ERV ventilation for tight homes

New builds and tightly sealed retrofits need mechanical ventilation. A Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) brings in fresh outdoor air and recovers 70–85% of the heat from outgoing stale air — fresh air without the heating bill. ERVs add humidity recovery for summer.

How a whole-home air-quality system gets installed

Install procedure for a layered IAQ stack: high-MERV filter cabinet, whole-home humidifier, and UV-C or polarized-media purifier.

  1. 01

    Audit existing return & static pressure

    We measure total external static pressure first. Adding a 5" MERV-13 cabinet to a system that's already starved for return air will choke the blower — we fix the return first.

  2. 02

    5" media cabinet installed at the return

    The 1" filter slot is removed and a 5" media cabinet is sheet-metaled in at the return drop. Door faces a serviceable side so you can change the filter without crawling.

  3. 03

    Bypass humidifier mounted

    Humidifier mounts on the warm-air supply with a bypass duct to the return. ¼" water line is run from a saddle valve on cold copper to the solenoid.

  4. 04

    Humidistat & outdoor sensor wired

    Humidistat is set on the return duct (or integrated into a smart thermostat) and an outdoor temperature sensor is added so target RH tapers down in deep cold to prevent window condensation.

  5. 05

    UV-C lamp or polarized media added

    UV-C lamp is mounted aimed at the evaporator coil to inhibit biological growth, or a polarized-media cell is wired into a 24V transformer downstream of the filter.

  6. 06

    Commission & document baseline

    We log indoor RH, particulate count (PM2.5), and static pressure before/after. You get a one-page baseline so future changes are measurable.

  7. 07

    Maintenance schedule set

    Media filter every 6–12 months, humidifier pad annually, UV lamp every 24 months. Reminders go into our system and you get a postcard.
