Do you need Hyper-Heating for a Hudson winter?
Hudson winters are Twin Cities winters. Mitsubishi's Hyper-Heating INVERTER (H2i) outdoor units are its cold-climate line, and Mitsubishi rates them to keep running down to -13°F. Standard models cost less and cool just as well, but they aren't built to carry heating through a St. Croix Valley January.
Our rule of thumb: if the mini-split is only for cooling a bonus room or taking the chill off a porch in spring and fall, a standard unit can be the right buy. Expect a mini-split in heat mode to pause now and then on cold, damp days. That's the defrost cycle: frost builds on the outdoor coil, the system briefly reverses to melt it, and the indoor fan stops so it doesn't blow cool air at you. Which Hudson houses are a good fit for mini-splits?
Hudson has a mix. Some older homes near downtown and the riverfront heat with a boiler, or have ductwork that never reached the upper floor well, so a head or two for cooling and shoulder-season heat avoids opening plaster. Newer houses on the edges of town usually have forced air, and the mini-split job there is the bonus room over the garage, the lower-level family room or the four-season porch that the ducts don't keep comfortable. Out past the city, propane homes have the most to gain from a heat pump, since every hour it runs is propane you don't buy.
