Inspiration is a different kind of neighborhood entirely. Its walkout two-stories sit beside acres of native prairie, trails and a nature center, with lower levels that are often finished as living space and upstairs bedrooms that are the last stop on the duct system. We check duct sizes and static pressure first, since zoning on undersized ducts makes the furnace work harder.
We added insulation and new windows to our older Bayport house. Is the furnace too big now?
It may be. The furnace was sized for the house as it used to be, and tighter walls and windows lower the heat loss. Too much furnace means short bursts of heat, rooms that swing warm and cool, and extra wear on igniters and relays. At replacement time, a Manual J on the updated house often calls for a smaller unit. Until then, a correctly set blower speed and a thermostat with cycle-rate settings can ease the short-cycling.
