The First Mahtomedi Assembly of the Chautauqua Association platted the village in July 1883 and built cottages and a 3,000-seat tabernacle on the lake's southeast side, with tent camps filling in each summer. From 1899 a streetcar line brought St. Paul crowds to Wildwood Amusement Park, and the Wildwood Park Association platted lakeside additions between 1892 and 1914: Lakeview, Oak Grove, Eastshore and Forest Heights. The park closed in 1932, a year after Mahtomedi incorporated.
Growth came much later. After the 1972 merger with Lincoln Township, the population rose from 2,640 in 1970 to 7,563 in 2000, which puts most houses away from the shore in those three decades, typically on basements with trunk-and-branch ducts.
