What are Hugo homes like to heat and cool?

Hugo began as Centerville Station, a refueling stop on the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad, which came through in 1869, and it incorporated as a village in 1906. Oneka Township around it stayed farm country, with stock farms, hay and later many horse farms, until township and village were combined into the City of Hugo in 1972. Older houses are scattered today: farmsteads out in the former township and homes around the old village along Highway 61, which follows the old rail line.

The boom came after 1990 and peaked in the 2000s, when the city's housing count jumped from 2,174 units to 5,189. Victor Gardens and Waters Edge brought smaller homes and lots to the west side, while much of the east half kept rural zoning, with 10-acre minimum lots on private wells and septic. Hugo also has one manufactured home park, with about 105 homes, on the east side of Highway 61 at the north end of downtown. For heating and cooling, that makes most Hugo houses close in age, and their builder equipment is wearing out on a similar schedule.

Hugo's rural eastern half is open country, and a northwest wind across bare fields drifts snow over the low side-wall PVC pipes that a condensing furnace breathes through. When the intake plugs, the furnace locks out, often overnight. Check those pipes after every storm and keep shoveled snow away from them. Our house is on Hugo's north end. Is our electricity from Connexus or Xcel?

It matters when you add a heat pump or central air, because rebates and heat pump rate programs belong to whichever utility serves your meter. Does Hugo's hard water affect a furnace humidifier?

Yes. The city puts its water at about 15 grains of hardness, or 258 ppm, and those minerals end up in the humidifier.
