The AC came with our Hugo house. Can it be converted off R-22 instead of replaced?
Technically, but we rarely recommend it. Retrofit refrigerants exist, yet converting takes labor, sometimes an oil change and new settings, and often costs the system some capacity. On a unit that's already leaking and 15-plus years old, that money is better put toward a new matched system. If the problem is a capacitor, contactor or fan motor instead, repairing the R-22 unit still makes sense.

It can be. Each unit draws air across its coil from the sides and exhausts it upward, so units jammed against each other, a wall or a fence end up breathing their own hot air and run at higher pressure on hot days. Manufacturers list minimum clearances in their install instructions. Keep plantings back, rinse the coils each spring, and talk to the association before anything gets moved.
