What a Navien combi does, and what it doesn't
Navien, Inc., based in Irvine, California, is the North American arm of KD Navien, a South Korean company founded in 1978 that says it built Asia's first condensing boiler in 1988. In Minnesota you mostly meet two kinds of Navien heating equipment. The NCB and NFC combi boilers heat the house and make domestic hot water from one wall-hung cabinet. The NFB and NHB boilers are heat-only; hot water, if they supply it at all, comes from a separate indirect tank.

What goes wrong with Navien boilers in Minnesota?
Most Navien calls fall into a few groups.
Lukewarm hot water from a combi. The combi's hot water side runs through a small stainless heat exchanger. Hard water, especially from a private well out past the suburbs, scales it up, and the symptom is hot water that won't get hot at full flow or swings in temperature. Descaling usually fixes it. A water softener or scale-prevention filter keeps it from coming back.
Ignition and flame faults at high fire. Navien says its combi boilers can run on a 1/2-inch gas line up to 24 feet, subject to local code. Past that, or on a long propane run, the burner can starve for gas when it ramps up, which looks like a random ignition or flame-loss error. We measure gas pressure with the boiler at full fire before we replace any part.
Freezing condensate and vents. Condensing boilers drain acidic condensate and vent cool, wet exhaust through PVC. On a sub-zero night a drain line along an outside wall or a vent termination buried in drifted snow can shut the boiler down. We check the routing, the slope and the termination clearances.
Pressure and air problems. Low system pressure, air trapped in the loop, a failed expansion tank or a dripping relief valve all show up on a combi the same way they do on any boiler. What kind of heating system suits a Navien boiler best?
A Navien does its best work on a system that can use cooler water for long stretches. Radiant floors in a basement slab, a garage or a lake-home addition are the classic match, and the wide turndown lets the boiler idle along on mild days instead of cycling on and off. It takes more care on an old cast-iron radiator system. Those loops hold a lot of water and sludge, and a compact condensing boiler needs its own piping arrangement and clean water to last. Replacing a Navien, and booking
We don't publish a boiler replacement range, because the piping, venting and hot water needs change the job too much. National cost guides such as HomeGuide put a typical high-efficiency boiler replacement at $4,000–$10,000. Installs carry our 2-year labor warranty on top of the manufacturer's parts warranty, and boiler replacement normally needs a mechanical permit.

Navien questions
Is a Navien combi boiler the same as a Navien tankless water heater?
No. A combi boiler heats your house through radiators, baseboard or floor tubing and also makes domestic hot water. Navien's NPE tankless water heaters are a separate product that only heats water. This page and our service cover Navien combi and heating boilers.
Why does my Navien combi run out of hot water with two showers going?
A combi heats water as it flows, so it has a gallons-per-minute limit that shrinks as the needed temperature rise grows. Navien lists the NCB-240/130H at 5.4 gallons per minute with a 67°F rise. In January, Minnesota tap water comes in colder, so the rise is bigger and the flow you get is lower. Scale on the hot water heat exchanger cuts it further.
Can a Navien replace the old boiler feeding my cast-iron radiators?
Often, with the right piping. Old cast-iron radiator systems hold a lot of water and sometimes large pipes, and a compact condensing boiler usually needs to be piped primary-secondary or with a hydraulic separator so it gets the flow it needs. The old loop may also need flushing so sludge doesn't foul the new heat exchanger. We look at the system before quoting.
