Often. One thermostat can't satisfy three levels at once, so the lowest level runs cool while the top floor runs warm. Zoning adds motorized dampers and a thermostat per level; national cost guides such as HomeGuide put two to three zones in an existing home at $1,700–$3,500. A second system makes more sense when one furnace can't move enough air to the far level. We run a Manual J by level before recommending either.

Converted cabins were rarely built around a furnace, so the ducts came later and rooms added after that got whatever reach was left. Supply runs through a cold crawlspace, or long flexible ducts, lose heat before they arrive, and many of these rooms have no return. We measure airflow at each register, seal and insulate what runs through unheated space, and add a return where we can. A ductless head often suits the farthest room.

The condenser needs a level pad, or a wall bracket where no pad fits, with the manufacturer's clearances and a line-set length it's rated for. Furnace PVC needs its minimum height above grade and expected snow, plus distance from windows and the gas meter. On a slope, grade can sit far below a vent on one wall and nearly touch it on the next, so the exit point matters. We walk the lot during the quote.

For associations and apartment owners, we do light-commercial work too, such as rooftop units, commercial furnaces and mini-splits for common areas.
