It can, but figure it on Glencoe's rate, not a metro utility's. A heat pump's operating cost comes down to the price of electricity against the price of your gas or propane. Glencoe Light & Power publishes its own rate schedule and runs its own programs, so we use your actual rate to decide whether a heat pump makes sense alone, as dual fuel with your furnace, or not yet.

A furnace-mounted humidifier helps, but set it by the weather. In cold weather, indoor humidity around 25 to 35 percent is the usual target, lower when it's well below zero, or you'll get frost and water on the windows. Older houses lose moisture fast through air leaks, so sealing attic bypasses and rim joists makes the humidifier's job easier.

Usually because air can't get back out. Many older two-stories have supplies upstairs but no return, so once a closed bedroom fills with air, the warm supply stops flowing into it. Adding a return, or transfer grilles above the doors, lets the supply do its job. Sealing attic bypasses around the chimney and light fixtures keeps the heat from leaking straight out. A bigger furnace won't fix either problem.

Often, but plan the venting. A 96% furnace vents through PVC to a side wall or the roof and needs a condensate drain, so the old chimney may end up serving only the water heater, which can then need a liner or a power-vent model. In a small older house the fuel savings are smaller, so the math depends on your gas bill. We price both options in writing, venting work included.
