Winsted's post office dates to 1858, and the older town grew along the west shore of Winsted Lake, around Main Street and Holy Trinity. Houses there run from early-1900s two-stories and story-and-a-halfs to postwar ramblers, and many older ones still use panned joist spaces as return ducts and a chimney that has vented several generations of equipment. The town grew slowly and steadily through the middle of the century, from about 940 residents in 1950 to 1,580 in 1990, so each decade left a few streets of its own style.
The 1990s brought the biggest jump, about 500 residents, with more building in the 2000s. Those subdivision homes have PVC-vented furnaces and central air, and the 1990s condensers among them are the oldest still running in town. Winsted on the Lake, on McLeod Cooperative Power, mixes lake homes of different ages and heating setups, from gas furnaces to electric heat on an off-peak rate.

In the older homes near Main Street, leaky basement ductwork is a common reason the house feels cold while the basement stays warm. Heat escapes through open seams in trunks and panned joists before it reaches the rooms upstairs, and sealing the reachable joints with mastic sends it where it belongs. On lake properties, keep an eye on the high-efficiency furnace's PVC pipes, since open ground toward the lake lets snow drift and a buried intake shuts the furnace down while you are away.

Winsted's 1990s subdivisions are where the oldest central air still runs, and an original condenser from that decade almost certainly uses R-22. Production of R-22 ended in 2020, so a leak repair and recharge now costs far more than it once did, and each summer's top-off adds to it. Why does our lakeside Winsted house feel clammy even with the AC on?
Usually the air conditioner is oversized or its blower runs too fast. A unit that cools the house in ten minutes shuts off before the coil has time to pull much moisture out. Slowing the blower, moving to a two-stage or variable-speed system at replacement, or adding a whole-house dehumidifier all help. Lower the humidity and the house feels cooler at the same thermostat setting.
We leave our Winsted lake home empty for part of the winter. How do we protect it?
Set the thermostat no lower than the mid-50s, have the furnace checked in the fall, and make sure the intake and exhaust pipes of a high-efficiency furnace won't be buried by drifting snow. A Wi-Fi thermostat that sends a low-temperature alert to your phone is cheap insurance. Ask a neighbor to check on the house after big storms.
We're in Winsted on the Lake. Does McLeod Co-op's off-peak program change what we should install?
It can. McLeod Cooperative Power's off-peak programs give electric heat a lower rate in exchange for letting the co-op switch it off at peak times, and its Dual Fuel option pairs electric heat with a gas or propane furnace as backup. A heat pump on that setup needs its own meter and controls that hand off cleanly. Ask the co-op for current terms first, and note that its heat pump rebates need a registered Quality Installer.
The return grille in our older Winsted house whistles. What causes that?
Often a panned return. Many older houses use the space between two floor joists, closed off with a sheet-metal pan, as return duct. Those pans leak around the edges, pull basement air and dust into the system, and whistle when the return is too small for the blower. Sealing the pan with mastic helps. If the return is undersized, adding a second return or a hard duct fixes both the noise and the airflow.
