When a high-efficiency furnace moves to PVC venting, the gas water heater is left alone in a chimney sized for two appliances. Its small, cool exhaust may not draft well, and moisture condenses inside the chimney. That can mean backdrafting and a crumbling liner. The fix is a properly sized liner or a power-vent water heater, and we put it in the furnace quote instead of a change order.

Possibly, but check the registration. Many manufacturers only give the longer parts warranty if the equipment was registered online within 60 days of installation, and that step sometimes got missed on new construction. Send us the model and serial numbers and we can help look it up. Labor coverage from the original installer usually runs shorter than the parts warranty.

Clean or replace its filters every few months, wash the core once or twice a year as the manual describes, and clear leaves and snow off the outdoor intake and exhaust hoods. On an HRV, check that the condensate drain runs freely. Balancing the airflow takes instruments, so that belongs on a service visit. A neglected exchanger leaves the house stuffy and can make winter window condensation worse.

If the house already has a forced-air furnace, a coil on the furnace and a condenser outside use the existing ducts, after we check that they can carry cooling airflow. If the house has a boiler, or ductwork that won't work, ductless heads in the main rooms avoid opening walls. In Waverly's older homes the first floor often cools easily while the second floor needs its own solution.
