Maple Lake was platted in 1886 by James Madigan, on land Irish families from County Clare had been settling since the 1850s, and the early blocks around the Highway 55 main street hold its oldest houses. Those are frame two-stories and story-and-a-halfs that most likely burned wood or coal before gas arrived, and some kept a chimney that now serves only the water heater or a wood stove. The town grew slowly and steadily, from about 780 residents in 1950 to 2,160 in 2020, so each decade added a few streets rather than one big subdivision.
That slow growth means Maple Lake has a bit of everything in small doses: 1960s–70s ramblers, 1990s split-entries and some 2000s homes. Each era brings its own equipment: chimney-vented furnaces downtown, 80% furnaces with metal flues in the ramblers, and PVC-vented high-efficiency units on the newest streets. Can I heat my Maple Lake shop with an unvented propane heater?
We don't recommend it in an insulated building. An unvented heater releases all of its combustion moisture and exhaust into the shop, which is how you end up with rusty tools, dripping steel roofs and headaches. A vented unit heater, or a cold-climate ductless head in a well-insulated shop, costs more up front and avoids those problems. We size either one to the building.
We heat with a wood stove and have a furnace too. How do we keep the bedrooms warm?
The usual culprit is a thermostat near the stove: it reads 74°F and never calls the furnace while the bedrooms drop. Moving the thermostat to a hallway, or running the furnace fan on low to spread stove heat, helps. Keep the furnace on a fall tune-up anyway, because a unit that sits idle most of the winter still has to work the night the fire goes out.
Can our wood stove share a chimney with the furnace in our Maple Lake house?
No. A wood stove needs its own flue. Sharing a chimney with a gas or propane furnace or water heater can upset the draft for both, and creosote and exhaust end up where they don't belong, which is why codes don't allow it. If your stove and furnace tie into one chimney now, stop using the stove until it's sorted out. We can re-vent the furnace in PVC and leave the chimney to the stove.
Our lake home on Maple Lake has only baseboard heat. What would lower our bills?
A cold-climate ductless heat pump usually does. It moves heat instead of making it, so it uses much less electricity than baseboard for the same warmth through most of the winter, and it cools in summer.
