In most cases a single ductless mini-split head is the cleanest fix. A converted porch has more glass and less insulation than the rooms beside it, so a register spliced off the nearest duct just steals air from the next room and still leaves the porch cold. A mini-split gives the porch its own thermostat, and it cools in summer too.

It might be. White tape and wrap on older ducts and boiler piping was often made with asbestos. It is only a hazard when it is disturbed, so leave it alone. Before we cut into that ductwork for a furnace swap, it should be tested, and if it comes back positive a licensed abatement contractor removes it first. We plan the install around that step.

Often, yes. Those ducts are oversized for a modern blower, so they move air easily, but they usually lack dampers, leak at the seams and return air through one or two floor grates. We measure static pressure, seal what we can reach and add a proper return if needed. In most of these houses, a return added in the far rooms does more for comfort than any change to the furnace.

Yes, without tearing out the radiators. Ductless mini-splits put a head in each main room and run small refrigerant lines outside. Small-duct high-velocity systems snake flexible tubing through closets and attic space to small round outlets. Mini-splits also add heat in fall and spring. We look at the attic, closets and wall space before recommending one, and the boiler keeps doing the winter work.
