Big Lake began as an ice-harvesting stop, with a rail station built in 1871 to ship lake ice to Twin Cities iceboxes, and it later became a summer getaway with cabins around Big Lake and Mitchell Lake. The town stayed small for a long time, around 500 to 600 residents in the 1950s, and then grew in steps: past 2,200 by 1980, 6,000 by 2000 and about 11,700 by 2020. Each step left a different kind of house.
The 1970s and 80s brought ramblers and split-levels, most of which have replaced their original furnace at least once. The 1990s and 2000s, when the population more than tripled, filled the subdivisions away from the lakes with two-stories, split-entries and ramblers on 90%+ furnaces, and the oldest central air in those neighborhoods may still run on R-22. Along the shore, some original cabins sit beside full rebuilds, so two neighboring lake homes can have completely different heating systems. The rural edge adds acreage homes on propane.
