Five years ago the answer was "kind of, not really." In 2026 it's a flat yes — with one important caveat about the coldest week of the year.

What changed

Cold-climate heat pumps (CCHPs) from Mitsubishi, Trane, Carrier, and Lennox use variable-speed inverter compressors and enhanced vapor injection to maintain rated heating capacity down to roughly -15°F. That covers about 97% of Twin Cities winter hours. For the remaining 3% — the deep cold snaps when overnight lows drop below -20°F — you want a backup heat source.

How they heat your house

A heat pump is an air conditioner that runs in reverse. In summer it pulls heat out of your house and dumps it outside (cooling). In winter it pulls heat out of the outdoor air — yes, even at 0°F there's plenty of thermal energy in air — and pumps it inside. Because it's moving heat instead of generating it from combustion, a CCHP delivers 2–3 units of heat for every unit of electricity, even in the cold.

The dual-fuel sweet spot

For most Twin Cities homes, the right answer isn't "heat pump OR furnace" — it's both. A dual-fuel system pairs a CCHP with your existing (or new) gas furnace. Cooling thrown in for free

What about all-electric (no furnace)?

Possible, but only with the right house. A tight, well-insulated home with electric backup strips can run heat-pump-only year-round.
