Because the house has probably changed since that furnace was sized. New windows, attic insulation and siding cut heat loss, but replacement furnaces often get copied from the old nameplate. We run a Manual J load calculation on the house as it stands now. A furnace that fits runs longer, quieter cycles and keeps rooms more even than one that blasts heat and shuts off.

Usually. Most smart thermostats need a constant 24-volt power wire, called the C-wire, and older houses often have only two or three thermostat wires run decades ago. We can pull a new cable, add an adapter at the furnace, or choose a thermostat that works without one. On a single-stage furnace the gains are mostly scheduling and remote control.

Both trace back to the knee walls and the short attic spaces behind them. Heat escapes there, warms the roof deck and melts snow that refreezes at the eaves, while the rooms lose heat through thin insulation. Air sealing and insulating those spaces fixes the cause. On the HVAC side, a return in the upstairs hall and properly sized supplies to each bedroom keep the rooms closer to the thermostat.

Possibly. A house that has been re-sided, re-windowed and reinsulated leaks far less air than when it was built, so moisture from cooking, showers and breathing lingers. A bath fan that actually vents outdoors, on a timer, is the first step, along with a lower humidifier setting in cold weather. If the frost and stuffiness continue, a small HRV or ERV brings in fresh air without dumping the heat.
