For a garage or shop where gas reaches the building, a vented unit heater on its own thermostat is simple and dependable. A guest house that also needs cooling is a better fit for a ductless heat pump. Either way, a building that sits empty should have a thermostat that can send an alert if the temperature drops, so a failed heater doesn't become frozen pipes.

Multi-system houses often have zones that overlap. A lower-level floor heating loop, a basement furnace and an upstairs system can all react to the same afternoon sun and the same open stairwell. We check each system's airflow, settings and thermostat locations, then set them up so each one covers its own area instead of undoing another system's work.

Once a year each: furnaces and boilers before heating season, air conditioners and heat pumps before summer, plus the ERV or HRV, humidifier pads and any in-floor loop. Dual-fuel systems need both halves checked. On a big property it helps to keep one list of every unit, its age and what it serves, and we can write that up at the first visit so later calls go faster.

Often. Horizontal furnaces are built to lie on their side in crawlspaces and attics, and some low-profile models fit tight utility closets. The space needs clearance for service, a solid level base and a way to vent and drain condensate without freezing. If the crawlspace is damp or can't stay above freezing, a ductless heat pump or a furnace moved into an interior closet may be the better plan.
