If not, the choices are a propane furnace, a cold-climate heat pump with propane or electric backup, or a new oil furnace. Shorter-cabinet furnaces handle most low basements, and some models can be installed on their side. When the ductwork already hangs low, we plan the new plenum and transitions so the install doesn't take away more headroom than the old one did.

Yes, though ducts are rarely the answer, because most enclosed porches sit on piers or a slab with no basement to run them through. A small ductless heat pump heats and cools the porch on its own, and insulating the floor and walls first cuts the load a lot. For a porch used only now and then, an electric wall heater on its own thermostat is a cheaper option.

Ask your supplier about automatic delivery, which schedules fills by the weather, or a tank monitor that reports the level to your phone. Keep the driveway and the path to the tank plowed wide enough for the truck, and call before the gauge gets low when a cold forecast is coming.
