Who makes Gree mini-splits?
Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai was founded in 1991 and is based in Zhuhai, China. It describes itself as the world's largest specialized air conditioner company, handling its own research, manufacturing, sales and service. In the US the brand is sold as GREE Comfort. The current single-zone lines carry R32 in the name (Sapphire R32, Vireo R32, Livo R32), while R-410A models such as the Sapphire, Vireo GEN3, Livo GEN4 and Vireo+ ULTRA are still listed. That split matters on a repair: the refrigerant on the label decides the charge, the recovery cylinder and the replacement parts, and the two refrigerants are never mixed.
Gree model numbers are easy to read once you know the pattern. In LIV12HP230V1R32AH, LIV is the Livo series, 12 is the size in thousands of BTU, 230V1 is the 230-volt version, R32 is the refrigerant and AH marks the indoor unit; the matching outdoor unit ends in AO. Sapphire starts with SAP, Vireo with VIR, the Vireo+ ULTRA with VIRU, and multi-zone outdoor units with MUL.
Gree ratings against a Minnesota winter
Gree publishes a heating range for each line, and the spread is wide. The Livo R32 is listed down to -13°F. The Sapphire R32, Vireo R32 and Multi R32 go to -22°F. The Vireo+ ULTRA, with its two-stage, three-cylinder variable-speed compressor, and the MultiPRO multi-zone are listed down to -31°F. On the ducted side, Gree rates the FLEXX ULTRA R32 for 100% heating capacity at 5°F.
A heating range only tells you how cold the unit keeps running. Output drops as it gets colder, and the Twin Cities see -20°F nights. So we treat a Livo in a porch or garage differently from a Vireo+ ULTRA heating a bedroom over the garage, and we keep backup heat in rooms that must stay warm. What usually goes wrong with a Gree mini-split?
Gree wall units show fault codes on the indoor display, and we look them up in Gree's service documentation for that model before ordering parts. The usual ductless problems apply: a dirty filter and coil, a clogged condensate drain, a loose communication wire between the head and the outdoor unit, and flare joints that seep refrigerant at the line-set connections. Outdoor units set too low collect snow and refreeze their own defrost water, which shows up as ice building under the unit and heat that fades as winter goes on.
On multi-zone systems, one outdoor unit runs every head, so a problem in one room can start at the outdoor unit. We test the heads one at a time to separate the two. Gree warranty claims go through a contractor
Gree is strict about who files a claim. Its warranty guide says claims may only be submitted by a contractor on behalf of the homeowner, after an on-site diagnosis of the failure, and homeowners can't submit them directly. Registration isn't required for the standard warranty, though Gree highly recommends it. The 10-year extended warranty applies only when a GREE Select dealer installed the system and it was registered on Gree's site within 60 days of installation.
So start with your installing contractor, which is also what Gree tells owners to do. If that company is gone, we can diagnose the unit and write up the model, serial number, fault code and failed part. We service Gree as an independent contractor and don't claim any Gree dealer status.
Which Gree mini-split fits your room?
For a three-season porch, a workshop or a garage, a Livo is often enough, and the 115-volt option on its 9,000 and 12,000 BTU sizes can make the wiring simpler. For a room that has to hold temperature in January, pick a line Gree lists to -22°F or lower, and still plan backup heat.
