Samsung, Lennox and the label on your unit
Samsung's residential heat pumps are sold in the US under the Samsung HVAC name, and since 2024 they've gone through Samsung Lennox HVAC North America, a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Lennox. Samsung owns 50.1% and Lennox 49.9%. The venture sells Samsung ductless equipment in the US and Canada, along with mini-splits branded Lennox Powered by Samsung that go through Lennox's own stores and dealers. If a newer Lennox mini-split hangs on your wall, it comes out of the same partnership, and our Lennox page covers the rest of that brand.
For repairs, the label matters more than the logo. Samsung's wall heads carry model numbers that start with AR and the size, so an AR09 is a 9,000 BTU head and an AR24 a 24,000 BTU head. The FJM multi-zone outdoor units, the Hylex heat pump and the EHS Mono HT use other prefixes (AJ, AC and AE on the models Samsung lists). We order parts by the full model and serial number, never by the name on the front panel.
How do Samsung mini-split lines differ in cold weather?
Samsung publishes a heating range for every line, and they differ a lot. WindFree Premium and WindFree Standard heads are listed for heating down to -5°F. The 36K wall unit and FJM Premium multi-zone systems are rated for high heating output at -13°F. WindFree Max Heat is the cold-climate line: Samsung rates it for 100% heating performance at 5°F and high heating output at -22°F, with a base pan heater that keeps defrost water draining instead of freezing in the outdoor unit.
Twin Cities nights reach -20°F, and every heat pump makes less heat as the air gets colder. A WindFree Standard head that stops heating at -10°F is below its rating, and that calls for backup heat more than a repair. So we plan Samsung systems with backup heat (baseboard, a boiler or the existing furnace) in rooms that have to stay warm, and we mount the outdoor unit on a stand or bracket above drifting snow. What is a Samsung Hylex heat pump?
Hylex is Samsung's answer for ducted houses. It's an inverter-driven outdoor heat pump, 2 to 5 tons on R-454B refrigerant, built as a direct replacement for a conventional air conditioner or heat pump condenser. Samsung says it connects to coils and air handlers with a TXV (conditions apply), pairs with a gas furnace and works with virtually any 24VAC thermostat. In a Minnesota house with a sound gas furnace, that's dual fuel: the heat pump carries spring, fall and mild winter days, and the furnace takes the deep cold. The EHS Mono HT is rarer. It's an air-to-water heat pump that heats water for hydronic systems, rated for heating operation down to -22°F, and Samsung gives it control outputs for a backup boiler. That's the interesting part for old boiler houses in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Cast-iron radiators were sized for hotter water than a heat pump makes efficiently, so the question is whether your radiators can carry the house at lower water temperatures, with the boiler covering the coldest days. What gets checked first on a Samsung mini-split service call?
The indoor display is the first stop. Samsung heads show fault codes there, and we match the code to Samsung's service data before replacing a board, a sensor or a fan motor. No-heat calls often trace back to simpler things: a filter packed with dust, a clogged condensate drain, a loose terminal on the communication wire between the indoor and outdoor units, or an outdoor coil iced over because defrost water had nowhere to go.
If a system loses heat in the first cold snap, we leak-check the flare connections and line set, because a slow leak shows up when the unit works hardest. Current WindFree, Max Heat and FJM systems use R-32 refrigerant and Hylex uses R-454B, so a leak repair means recovering what's left, fixing the leak, pulling a vacuum and weighing in the charge. Samsung says its Freeze Wash button helps maintain performance, but it doesn't replace washing filters and cleaning the coil and blower wheel. Registering, replacing and booking a Samsung
Samsung's product pages list a 10-year warranty with product registration required, and its registration page says the product must be registered within 60 days of installation to secure the enhanced warranty on eligible products. If your system went in recently, confirm it was registered, and keep the model numbers, serial numbers and install date together.
When a Samsung is due for replacement, we install Samsung where it fits the house and size it with a Manual J load calculation.
