Utica Boilers, ECR and TerraVest
Utica Boilers goes back to 1928, when Earle C. Reed opened a plant in Utica, New York, to make cast-iron radiators and baseboard. The company started designing boilers in the 1950s, and over time the name became Utica Boilers. Today it's a brand of ECR International (the initials are Reed's), which sits under Granby Industries and, as of 2026, Canada's TerraVest Industries.
ECR sells boilers under several names, including Dunkirk, Pennco, Green Mountain and a value-priced Utica Heating label, and the same cast-iron boiler can wear more than one badge. ECR's 2023 recall notice listed the Utica MGB-K next to the Dunkirk DXL-K, the Pennco 15B-K and the Utica Heating UH15B-K. So we order parts by the model and serial number on the rating plate, not by the name on the jacket.
TerraVest says the largest markets for its heating products are the Northeastern U.S. and Eastern Canada, so Utica is a less familiar name in Minnesota. Its cast-iron models are conventional atmospheric boilers, with nothing unusual about servicing them. Our boiler and radiant heat page covers how we work on hydronic systems in general.
Cast-iron Utica boilers on steam and hot water
Utica's PEG-F and PEG-E are gas steam boilers, the kind of replacement that goes into a 1920s Saint Paul house still heating with its original steam radiators. They're built the traditional way, with cast-iron sections joined by push nipples, and they vent into a chimney. On a steam PEG we check the water level in the gauge glass, the low-water cutoff, the pressure control and the main vents. Banging pipes usually trace back to water trapped in a main that lost its pitch, not to the boiler. Our post on boiler banging and kettling noises explains the sounds.
For hot water, the MGB-K is Utica's main cast-iron boiler. It lights with an intermittent pilot, opens a motorized vent damper before it fires, and uses an internal Hydrolevel control that adjusts water temperature to the heating demand. On a mild October afternoon it runs cooler water than on a -20°F night, which is the control doing its job, not a fault. The same control module includes the low-water cutoff.
When an MGB-K won't fire, we walk the sequence with a meter: damper open and proven, pilot lit and proven, main burners on. Two safety switches deserve respect, the flame roll-out switch and the manual-reset blocked-vent switch. When either one trips, the chimney or the draft is usually the reason, and resetting it without finding out why is how carbon monoxide ends up in a house.
What was the 2023 Utica MGB-K boiler recall?
On July 13, 2023, ECR announced a voluntary recall, with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, of about 1,764 gas-fired cast-iron water boilers built between December 5, 2022 and January 24, 2023. Some may be missing the flue inspection cover plate on top of the flue collector, which can let flue gases escape and create a carbon monoxide hazard. The Utica names on the list are the MGB-K and the Utica Heating UH15B-K. ECR reported no CO leaks, injuries or deaths tied to it.
The serial number is on the rating plate on the boiler's top panel, and ECR's recall page checks it against the affected ranges. ECR tells owners of a recalled boiler to stop using it until it's inspected, and the fix is a field repair kit installed by the original installer or a qualified technician. What condensing and combi boilers does Utica make?
Utica's newer wall-hung Oneida line uses a stainless steel water-tube heat exchanger. The CH heats the house; the CO combi also makes domestic hot water. Both are rated 95.2% AFUE with up to 10:1 turndown, and both can vent with PVC, CPVC, polypropylene or stainless pipe through a 3-in-1 adapter. You may also find a Utica SSC or MAC on the wall instead.
Condensing boilers save the most when return water runs cool, which is why they pair well with radiant floors and with radiators on outdoor reset. Our radiant floor vs baseboard guide explains why. An old radiator loop full of sludge should be flushed before a condensing boiler goes on it.
Repair or replace, and booking
A cast-iron Utica with tight sections and a working burner is usually worth repairing. We lean toward replacement when a section leaks, when burner or control parts are gone, or when repairs keep stacking up on an old boiler. A replacement is sized from a heat-loss calculation, or on steam from the connected radiation, not copied from the old nameplate, and it normally needs a mechanical permit. Boiler houses have no ducts for central air, so ductless mini-splits are the usual way to cool them.

Is my Utica boiler part of the ECR recall?
Only a narrow batch. Can a Utica PEG replace my old steam boiler?
Often. The PEG-F and PEG-E are cast-iron gas steam boilers that vent into a chimney, like most of the old steam boilers they replace. A steam boiler is sized to the radiators it has to fill, not to a heat-loss number, so we measure the radiation before quoting. The near-boiler piping matters as much as the boiler, and Utica gives the PEG-F 2 1/2-inch risers to make that piping easier. Steam can't use a condensing boiler.
Why won't my Utica MGB-K light when the thermostat calls?
We work through the sequence. The vent damper has to open and prove, the intermittent pilot has to light and prove, and then the main burners come on. A failed damper motor or end switch stops everything, and so does a tripped flame roll-out or blocked-vent switch, a low-water condition or a pilot that won't prove. Those two safety switches usually point to a draft problem, so don't keep resetting them.
Should I replace an old Utica with a condensing boiler?
On a hot-water system, often. Condensing boilers like Utica's Oneida do their best work with cooler return water, which suits radiant floors and radiator systems run on outdoor reset, and Utica offers outdoor reset as an Oneida option. Steam systems can't use one. If the old boiler shared a chimney with a gas water heater, the water heater may need a chimney liner once the boiler vents through PVC.
Do I need to register a new Utica boiler?
Yes. Utica says some of its condensing boilers get added coverage that isn't available unless the boiler is registered, and it offers extended parts-and-labor plans through Trinity Warranty. Terms differ by model: the residential Oneida lists a 10-year heat exchanger and 5-year parts limited warranty, and the cast-iron boilers carry their own terms. Check the certificate that came with yours.
