Viessmann Vitodens Boiler Repair in Minnesota

Viessmann's Vitodens condensing boilers show up in radiator houses and radiant-floor homes around the Twin Cities, and each one is built around a stainless steel heat exchanger that rewards a yearly service. We service Vitodens boilers old and new, check them against Viessmann's heat exchanger recall, and look after the piping, tanks and controls around them.

Viessmann product lines

Vitodens 100-W (B1HE heat-only, B1KE combi) Wall-hung gas condensing boiler with a stainless steel Inox-Radial heat exchanger and MatriX-Plus cylinder burner, 95% AFUE and a 10:1 turndown, for natural gas or propane. The number in the model is the maximum input in thousands of Btu per hour: B1HE-85 through B1HE-199, and B1KE-120 or B1KE-199 for the combi.

Vitodens 200-W (B2HE, and the older B2HB and WB2) Viessmann's step-up wall-hung condensing boiler. The current version has a 7-inch color touch screen, built-in WiFi and control of up to four heating circuits. Some B2HB boilers built from September 2014 to April 2017 fall under a heat exchanger recall.

Vitodens 222-F (B2TB) A floor-standing condensing boiler with a 26.5 US gallon domestic hot water tank built in. B2TB models 19 and 35 built from September 2014 to April 2017 are included in the same recall.

Vitogas and Vitola boilers Older non-condensing Viessmann boilers still in service, including the gas-fired Vitogas and the Vitola, whose historic manuals include Riello burner supplements. Viessmann keeps their manuals in its historic documents library.

Vitorond 100 oil boiler A triple-pass cast-iron sectional oil boiler rated 91 to 245 MBH input, still in Viessmann's US lineup for homes without gas.

Vitocell 300-V indirect tanks Single-coil vertical domestic hot water tanks from 42 to 119 US gallons, that pair with a boiler for household hot water.

Viessmann, Carrier and the Vitodens family

Viessmann started in 1917 as a heating manufacturer and is based in Allendorf (Eder), in northern Hesse, Germany. As of 2026, Viessmann Climate Solutions is part of Carrier Global Corporation, the same parent as Carrier. The boilers, manuals and technical support still come under the Viessmann name, through Viessmann's own US website.

The name to know is Vitodens, Viessmann's residential gas condensing boiler line, every one built around a stainless steel Inox-Radial heat exchanger. The Vitodens 100-W is the value model, the 200-W the step-up with a touch screen and control of up to four heating circuits, and the 222-F a floor-standing unit with a 26.5-gallon hot water tank built in. Larger buildings get Vitocrossal boilers, and homes without gas can still buy the Vitorond 100, a cast-iron oil boiler. We service and repair all of them, and we install new Viessmann boilers where they fit the house.

Check the recall first

On any Vitodens 200-W or 222-F, the first thing we do is check the serial number against Viessmann's heat exchanger recall. In a notice dated April 2019, Viessmann North America started voluntarily inspecting and replacing heat exchangers on Vitodens 200-W B2HB boilers (models 19, 26 and 35) and Vitodens 222-F B2TB boilers (models 19 and 35) manufactured between September 1, 2014 and April 13, 2017. The back plate of the heat exchanger can corrode through, leak condensate inside the boiler and, in rare cases, let flue gases into the room.

If yours is on the list, the fix goes through a licensed heating contractor. Either way, a condensing boiler that drips water inside the cabinet or smells of exhaust should be shut down and looked at. Minnesota law requires working carbon monoxide alarms within 10 feet of every sleeping room, and our post on CO detector placement covers where they go.

What goes wrong with a Viessmann Vitodens boiler?

Dirty heat exchangers. Viessmann describes the Inox-Radial heat exchanger as self-cleaning, and it also sells a heat exchanger cleaning kit and publishes flushing instructions. On an older or neglected boiler, deposits on the fire side or sludge on the water side cut efficiency, and we clean or flush as the boiler needs.
Burner service. When the burner comes out for cleaning, its gaskets get replaced. Viessmann sells them as service parts, and reusing an old one invites a leak.
Winter vent and drain trouble. The Vitodens 100-W allows vent runs up to 180 feet, which helps when the boiler sits in the middle of a basement. The termination still has to stay clear of snow and ice on a sub-zero night, and the condensate line and neutralizer can't be allowed to clog or freeze.
Combi hot water. A B1KE combi makes hot water on demand. Viessmann rates the B1KE-120 at 3.3 gallons per minute with a 77°F rise, and colder January tap water or scale on the plate heat exchanger will cut that.
Fault codes. The display shows a code, and Viessmann's fault code checker helps us confirm what it means before we replace anything.

What kind of heating system suits a Viessmann Vitodens?

A modulating condensing boiler saves the most when it can run cooler water. Radiant floors are the easy match. Cast-iron radiators work too when they're sized well and the boiler runs an outdoor reset curve, as in the older Country Club District and Morningside houses covered on our Edina boiler page. Old radiator loops carry sludge, so on a replacement we plan for flushing and a dirt separator. Steam systems can't use a Vitodens at all; they need a steam boiler.

Is Viessmann owned by Carrier now?

Yes. Viessmann Climate Solutions, founded in 1917 and based in Allendorf (Eder), Germany, says it is part of Carrier Global Corporation as of 2026. The boilers still carry the Viessmann name, and Viessmann's US website still runs the manuals, recall lookup and serial number tools. The change in ownership doesn't change how a Vitodens is repaired or which parts it takes.

Is my Vitodens part of the heat exchanger recall?

It may be if you have a Vitodens 200-W from the B2HB series (models 19, 26 or 35) or a Vitodens 222-F from the B2TB series (models 19 or 35) built between September 1, 2014 and April 13, 2017. Viessmann's US site has a serial number lookup. Affected boilers get a heat exchanger inspection and replacement through a licensed heating contractor.

What do B1HE and B1KE mean on a Vitodens 100?

B1HE is the heat-only boiler, and B1KE is the combi, which adds a plate heat exchanger for on-demand domestic hot water. The number after the dash is the maximum input in thousands of Btu per hour, so a B1HE-120 fires up to 120,000. Viessmann rates the B1KE-199 at 4.7 gallons per minute of hot water at a 77°F rise.

Can a Vitodens run on propane?

Yes. Viessmann says the Vitodens 100-W runs on natural gas or liquid propane with no mechanical adjustments; the fuel is changed at the control. That suits lake homes and houses past the gas lines. We still check combustion with an analyzer after any fuel change or gas valve repair, and the propane regulator and line have to be sized for the boiler at full fire.

How often should a Viessmann boiler be serviced?

We recommend once a year, before the heating season. On a Vitodens that means cleaning the heat exchanger and condensate trap, inspecting the burner and replacing its gaskets as needed, checking the vent and air intake, and testing combustion. Viessmann publishes heat exchanger cleaning and flushing instructions, and we can talk about a maintenance plan if you'd like a set schedule.
