What happens to the water heater in our Crystal house when the new furnace goes to PVC?
It stays on the chimney alone, and a masonry flue that once carried two appliances is now too big for one. The water heater's exhaust cools in the oversized flue, which can hurt draft and let condensation eat at the mortar. The fixes are a correctly sized liner in the chimney, or a power-vent water heater that exits through the wall like the furnace. We look at the chimney and the water heater's age before recommending one.
Should we replace the furnace and AC together in our Crystal house?
Often, in Crystal. The AC coil sits on the furnace in a tight space, so replacing the furnace alone may mean pulling and resetting the old coil, and if the AC is R-22 or near 15 years old, you'd pay for that work again soon.
