Yes. The usual setup is dual fuel: a heat pump replaces the air conditioner outside, and the gas furnace stays as the blower and backup heat. The heat pump carries the house through fall, spring and milder winter days, and the furnace takes over in deep cold. The existing ducts have to move enough air for the heat pump, so we measure that before quoting.

Coils for newer, higher-efficiency air conditioners are often taller than the one you have, and a 96% furnace adds a condensate trap and PVC connections. Under a low basement ceiling, the stack of furnace, coil and plenum can run into the joists. The fixes are a shorter furnace cabinet, a different coil shape, or a reworked plenum. We measure the height before quoting so install day holds no surprises.

It can be. An 80% furnace pulls combustion air from the room, and lint along with fumes from bleach, detergents and salt dust from the water softener get drawn into the burners, where chlorine compounds corrode the heat exchanger over time. Keep lint off the furnace and the dryer vent tight. A 96% furnace piped for outdoor combustion air avoids most of it, one more reason to go direct-vent at replacement.

Both come from the same spots. The upstairs rooms sit against the roof and knee walls, where insulation is usually thin and air leaks freely, and they're fed by one small duct with no return. Sealing and insulating the knee walls and the attic floor behind them is the first fix. Then a return upstairs, or a ductless head that heats and cools those rooms directly, evens things out.
