Usually without conventional ducts. Ductless mini-splits need only a line set and a small wall opening at each indoor head, and the outdoor unit can sit out of sight behind landscaping. Ceiling cassettes or slim wall units keep the look clean. If the house heats through ducts in the floor or slab, the first step is checking whether that ductwork can carry cooled air at all.

Large glass walls lose heat fast in January and pick up a lot of sun in July, and older glass makes both worse. A Manual J load calculation counts every window by size and direction, so the equipment matches the real load. Supply registers placed under the big glass, a variable-speed blower that runs longer and gentler, and window upgrades where possible all help.

Often, if the tubing holds pressure. Radiant systems from that era may use copper or steel pipe in the slab, and a leak shows up as a boiler that keeps losing pressure or a warm, damp spot on the floor. We pressure-test the loops before recommending anything. If they're sound, a new boiler with an outdoor reset control keeps the floors running; if not, ductless heat pumps or baseboard can take over.

Usually, since a Tudor has an attic and a basement to work with. Ducts for the upstairs can run through the attic from a small air handler there, or up through closets from the basement, and the outdoor unit goes in a side or rear yard behind plantings. Steep roofs keep the upstairs warm, so we size from a load calculation that counts them, not from square footage.
