Will a bigger furnace fix the cold upstairs rooms in our New Germany story-and-a-half?
Usually not. Those rooms are cold because too little heated air reaches them and the knee walls and roof slopes lose heat fast. A larger furnace warms the main floor sooner and shuts off sooner, so the upstairs gets even less. A Manual J shows what each room actually needs. The fixes are better supply and return paths, air sealing, or a ductless head for the upstairs.
What happens to the old brick chimney when our New Germany furnace goes high-efficiency?
The furnace stops using it, but the water heater may not. A chimney sized for two appliances can run too cool with only a water heater venting into it, and condensation then damages the masonry and weakens the draft. The usual fixes are a properly sized liner or a power-vent water heater, priced in the quote. If the chimney is crumbling above the roof, that's a mason's job, and we'll tell you what we saw.
