Our New Germany furnace shut off and a small switch near the burners has tripped. What is that?
Likely a flame rollout switch. It opens when flames roll out of the burner area instead of traveling up through the heat exchanger, which can happen when the chimney or flue is blocked or the heat exchanger is cracked. Don't keep resetting it. In older New Germany houses we check the chimney base and flue connector first, then the heat exchanger, and measure carbon monoxide before relighting.
The furnace in our New Germany basement hangs sideways from the joists. Is it harder to repair?
A little. Horizontal furnaces use the same parts as upright ones, but the burners, inducer and control board sit at awkward angles, and a high-efficiency model's condensate trap has to be set up for that position. A trap installed for the wrong orientation holds water and trips the pressure switch. The repair price is still flat-rate and written before we start, however long the access takes.
