Our Silver Lake Village home still has its original AC. Can we replace only the outdoor unit?
Usually not. The outdoor unit and indoor coil are rated as a matched pair, and new equipment made from 2025 on uses R-454B or R-32, which older coils weren't built for. Even if your system runs on R-410A, a mismatch costs efficiency and can complicate the warranty. We quote the condenser and matching coil together, check whether the line set can stay, and confirm the association's rules on the outdoor location.
Can a new AC handle the humidity in our St. Anthony house near Silver Lake better than the old one?
It can, if it's sized and set up for it. An oversized AC satisfies the thermostat in short runs and never dries the air much, so correct Manual J sizing comes first. A two-stage or variable-speed condenser runs longer at low speed, which dries the air more, and the blower can be set slower for dehumidifying. We set the system up for moisture as well as temperature.
