In 1872 Minneapolis absorbed most of old St. Anthony, including much of today's Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis, and roughly 1,000 acres of farmland to the north kept the name. After World War II a developer eyed land near St. Anthony Boulevard and asked Minneapolis to annex it so the houses could get city utilities. Residents voted 167 to 57 in 1945 to incorporate instead, and the state Supreme Court upheld the new village in March 1946. Farms turned into house lots quickly: about 1,400 people lived here in 1950, 5,100 in 1960 and more than 9,200 in 1970.
In the late 1950s the village annexed three sections of the old township on the Ramsey County side, about 600 acres, and part of that land became Apache Plaza, which opened in 1961 as one of the first enclosed malls in the country. Most of the single-family housing went up in that one 20-year burst, so furnace and AC replacements tend to arrive in waves. After the mall came down, Silver Lake Village rose on the site from 2004 with apartments, condominiums and cottage-style homes, and their original equipment is nearing its first replacement.
