The CO alarm in our older Elk River house only goes off when the furnace runs. What should we do?
Treat it as real. Get everyone outside, call 911 or the fire department from there, and keep the furnace off until it's checked. In older downtown homes the usual suspects are a chimney blocked by debris or a failed liner, a disconnected vent pipe, or a cracked heat exchanger. We test the draft and inspect the heat exchanger, and we'll red-tag the furnace if it isn't safe to run.
Can you work on the propane heater in our pole shed near Elk River?
Yes. Most shop heaters are vented unit heaters, and after a summer of sitting they tend to fail at the igniter or pilot, the venter motor, or a spider nest in the burner tube. We check the propane gas pressure, clean the burners and test the controls. If the shop is insulated and you keep it warm all winter, we can also talk about a ductless heat pump to carry part of the load.
