Our Ramsey propane furnace quit right after the tank ran low. Is the furnace broken?
Often it isn't. When a propane tank runs out, the lines lose pressure and the furnace locks out after its failed ignition tries. Before the system is relit, the propane supplier typically has to leak-test it, since an open valve somewhere in the house is a real risk after an outage. Once gas is back, we check the pressure at the furnace's gas valve, purge any air and clear the lockout.
We're on Connexus Energy's dual-fuel program. Why does our Ramsey furnace keep taking over from the heat pump?
Two normal reasons. Below the changeover temperature set on your thermostat or control, the furnace is supposed to carry the house. And during control periods under the reduced dual-fuel rate, Connexus shuts the heat pump off and the furnace runs instead. That means the furnace has to be dependable, because it's your whole heat supply on those days. If the furnace won't light when the heat pump is off, that's a priority repair call.
