The St. Paul Park Improvement Company bought William Fowler's farm and platted the town in 1887, and by 1888 it had more than 200 residences and a string of factories on a rail spur. Building picked up again slowly, so houses on the older blocks can be decades apart in age, and the early ones have had their heating redone more than once.
Sewers and water mains came in the mid-1950s, and new houses on the east side in the early 1960s pushed the population past 3,000. Most of those houses are several furnaces in by now, and their central air usually came years after the house. More building is planned, too; in 2005 the city annexed land from Grey Cloud Island Township for a large development.
