A ductless head or two is usually the cleanest answer. Running new ducts up through a bungalow means opening plaster walls or boxing in closets, and the half-story rooms under the roof are the ones that need cooling most. One indoor head mounts high on the wall, its refrigerant lines pass through a hole about three inches across, and the same unit warms the upstairs on cool spring and fall days. The main floor stays on its existing system.

For much of the winter, yes. A cold-climate model still delivers heat on subzero days, just less of it as the temperature falls, so Minnesota installs nearly always keep a furnace or electric strips behind it. A small cottage with modest heat loss suits one well. The catch is often the ductwork: a ducted heat pump needs more airflow than many old systems carry, so a ductless unit or duct work may be part of the plan.

Not always. Many big houses run well on one furnace with a zoning system, where motorized dampers in the ducts answer to separate thermostats for each area. That works when the ducts are sized for it. When the upper rooms are far from the furnace or the walkout level has its own heating and cooling needs, two systems can be simpler. A Manual J for each area and a static pressure test tell us which fits.

An HRV or ERV pulls filtered outdoor air in and pushes stale air out at the same rate, swapping heat between the two airstreams, so the windows can stay closed against train and traffic noise. For a whole-house unit tied into existing ductwork, a typical national range is $1,300–$2,500, per Fixr and Trane. Paired with central air, it keeps a closed-up house from feeling stuffy through the summer.
