There's a small box on the side of our Shoreview condenser. Could it be why the AC pauses on hot days?
It could. If that box is an Xcel Energy Saver's Switch, Xcel can cycle the air conditioner off and on during peak demand, and it recovers on its own. If there's no switch, or the pauses don't line up with peak hours, the usual suspects are an overheating condenser tripping its overload, a weak capacitor or a clogged coil, which we test on the call.
The condensers behind our Shoreview townhome are packed tight together. Can that cause breakdowns?
It can. A condenser throws hot air out the top or sides, and units standing a foot apart, or tucked against a fence, pull in each other's exhaust. The compressor runs hotter, pressures rise, and capacitors and contactors wear out sooner. On the call we check clearances against the installation manual and clean the coil. If a unit has room to move, the association may allow shifting it to a new pad.
