Luxaire, Johnson Controls and Bosch

Luxaire dates its brand to 1939. More recently it was one of the names inside Johnson Controls' residential and light-commercial HVAC business, alongside York, Coleman and Champion. In July 2024 Johnson Controls agreed to sell that business to the Bosch Group, and the sale closed in 2025. Bosch Home Comfort Group now lists Luxaire among its regional brands, and the Luxaire website is published by JC Residential and Light Commercial LLC.

The furnace in your basement didn't change when the owner did, and neither did the way we repair it. York and Coleman came out of the same business, and Luxaire shares many model names with Champion in particular: TM-series furnaces, AL-series air conditioners and the HMH7 heat pump appear in both lineups.

Acclimate, LX and the newer model names

Luxaire splits its lineup into named tiers. Acclimate is the top: the LP9C modulating furnace, which Luxaire rates up to 98% AFUE and which adjusts its output in 1% steps, and the AL21 variable-capacity air conditioner, rated up to 20 SEER2. Both are built to work with Luxaire's Hx3 communicating zoning system. LX is the tier below it, including the Z9VT, a two-stage furnace with a variable-speed ECM blower rated at 97% AFUE or higher.

The newer furnace names follow a pattern you can read off the rating plate. An 8 means an 80% AFUE furnace and a 9 means a condensing one. The Z8ES and Z9ES are single-stage, the Z8ET and Z9ET are two-stage, and the Z8VT and Z9VT are two-stage with a variable-speed blower. Luxaire still lists older TM-series names too, such as the two-stage TM9Y and the single-stage TM8E.

On the cooling side, the XC condensers run on R-454B and use microchannel coils. Luxaire says the 13.4 SEER2 XC3 is optimized for northern U.S. and Canadian climates, while the 14.3 SEER2 XC4 is aimed at the south. The XC6 reaches up to 17 SEER2.

What goes wrong with Luxaire furnaces in a Minnesota winter?

Condensing Luxaire furnaces tend to act up in the first deep cold. The inducer runs, the pressure switch doesn't close, and the control board locks out. Before replacing a switch we check the condensate trap and drain, the pitch of the PVC vent and the terminations outside, where frost and drifted snow can block the pipes. A furnace that lights and shuts down within seconds usually needs its flame sensor cleaned or its hot surface igniter replaced. Newer Luxaire furnaces such as the Z9VT and LP9C have a self-diagnostic control module, and we read its fault code before ordering parts. Our furnace repair page lays out the whole visit.

Two details help in Minnesota houses. The Z9VT's 33-inch cabinet leaves more room in basements where the furnace, coil and plenum stack up under low joists. And Luxaire lists the Z9VT as convertible to propane, which matters for lake places and farmhouses outside the gas lines. On a modulating LP9C, we check gas pressure and the zoning controls along with the burner, since that furnace spends most of the winter on long, low firing cycles.

Which Luxaire air conditioner suits a Minnesota home?

For a typical Minnesota replacement, the XC3 is the model Luxaire points at northern climates, and 13.4 SEER2 matches the federal minimum for split central air here. Because it's an R-454B unit, it needs an indoor coil rated for R-454B, so bolting it onto an old R-410A coil isn't the plan. Existing R-410A Luxaire systems, the AL21 included, can still be repaired and recharged, and an air conditioner that needs refrigerant every summer has a leak we find before charging.

Luxaire's XD5 and XDV are inverter heat pumps rated up to 18 and 20 SEER2. Luxaire doesn't publish a cold-climate rating for them, and every heat pump loses output as it gets colder, so we set them up as dual fuel with a gas furnace, or with electric backup heat.

Dry winter air is the other Minnesota problem. Warranty, replacement and booking

Luxaire's residential warranties require online registration within 90 days of installation, through UPGProductRegistration.com with the model and serial numbers. Registered equipment gets the longer terms: Luxaire lists a lifetime heat exchanger and 10 years on parts for the Z9VT, and a lifetime compressor warranty on the AL21. Unregistered equipment reverts to shorter terms, typically 5 years on parts. If you bought the house with the system in place, check its status before counting on the longer coverage.

Installed furnaces run $4,500–$9,500, central AC $5,200–$9,800 and heat pumps $7,500–$14,500. Installs carry our 2-year labor warranty on top of the manufacturer's parts coverage.
