A burning-dust smell for the first few minutes is normal. A musty smell that lingers usually means moisture left from summer: a damp filter, a wet AC coil or drain pan above the furnace, or ductwork in a damp lower level. Near the lake, summer moisture makes that more likely. Replace the filter, and if the smell stays, have the coil, drain pan and humidifier pad checked for mold.
There's rust inside our Deephaven furnace. Is that from being so close to the lake?
Partly, maybe. Damp basements near the water do rust furnace parts, but the usual culprits are closer: an AC coil or condensate pan dripping onto the furnace, a humidifier leaking or scaling on hard well water, or condensate running back from a vent.
