Not always. If the copper is the right size for the new system, isn't kinked or crushed, and can be flushed and pressure-tested, we reuse it and leave the ceiling alone. If it's undersized, damaged or of unknown history on an R-22 changeover, we look for a new route first: along a soffit, through a mechanical chase or outside under a line-set cover.
