Our Oak Grove furnace wouldn't start on the first cold night. Could something be in the vent pipe?

Quite possibly. Over the summer, wasps, birds and mice nest in PVC intake and exhaust pipes, and leaves collect at the terminations. The inducer can't pull enough draft, the pressure switch stays open, and after a few failed tries the control locks the furnace out. Look at the pipes outside for debris, but don't reach in. We clear the vent, check the pressure switch reading and add screens where the manufacturer allows them.

Our 1970s Oak Grove rambler's furnace runs in short bursts. Is it oversized?

Possibly. Furnaces in houses from that era were often sized generously, and later windows and insulation widened the gap. But short cycling also comes from a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter tripping the limit, or a thermostat mounted near a supply register. We rule those out first.
