Lake George had resorts and summer cabins by the early 1900s, drawing city vacationers by rail and by car, and the shift from seasonal cabins to permanent homes came mostly in the 1970s. Houses now line most of the shore, with Lake George Regional Park covering much of the north side. Converted cabins often have their mechanicals wherever they would fit, such as a closet furnace or a horizontal unit in the crawlspace, and rooms added over crawlspaces run cold in January and warm in July.
Away from the lake, Oak Grove grew from about 1,700 people in 1970 to 3,900 in 1980 and roughly 8,900 by 2020, one large lot at a time. When the furnace is due, moving the new one to a main-floor closet is sometimes worth pricing.
Our Oak Grove lot is off CenterPoint's gas lines. What changes with a propane furnace?
Less than you'd think. Most furnaces can be ordered for propane or converted with the manufacturer's LP kit, which swaps the orifices and adjusts the gas valve, and the efficiency rating doesn't change. The differences are the tank, its regulator and delivery access, plus a fuel price that usually makes a heat pump partner more attractive. Oak Grove only became a city in 1993. Do we still need a permit to replace a furnace?
