Burns Township split from St. Francis Township in 1869 and spent most of the next century as a rural township of several hundred people. The Nowthen Threshing Show, an August tradition for more than 50 years, celebrates that farm past on its grounds off Old Viking Boulevard.
Housing came in waves after 1970: 1,129 residents that year, 1,976 in 1980, 3,557 in 2000 and 4,443 in 2010. Most 1970s and 80s houses here have gone through two or three furnaces, and the 1990s and 2000s two-stories are reaching the age when original furnaces and air conditioners need replacing. In 2008 the township became the City of Nowthen to head off annexation, and the 2020 census still counted every resident as rural.

The addition on our older Nowthen farmhouse is always colder than the rest. Why?
Usually because the addition was tied into a heating system sized and ducted for the original house. A single long duct run, no return air and a floor over a crawlspace or slab leave it short of heat. A single-zone ductless heat pump gives the addition its own heating and cooling, and Connexus offers ductless rebates. Insulating the floor and sealing the joint between the old and new walls helps whatever heat it gets.
Can the wood stove in our Nowthen house be the backup heat for a heat pump?
Not for Connexus Energy's dual-fuel rate. Connexus excludes wood stoves and portable heaters as the alternate source; the backup has to start automatically from the thermostat and be able to heat the home for up to 400 hours. In practice that means a propane, natural gas or oil furnace or boiler sized for the house. The wood stove can still take the edge off, but it can't be what the program counts on.
