Big south- or west-facing glass lets in a lot of sun, and a vaulted room holds the heat up high where the thermostat can't feel it. The system may be undersized for that room or just short on airflow to it. A Manual J that counts the actual glass area and orientation tells us which. Fixes range from more supply air to a dedicated zone or a ductless unit for the great room.

Often not without help. The walkout level stays cool from the ground while the main floor and upstairs gain heat, so one thermostat is always wrong somewhere. Zoning with motorized dampers and a two-stage or variable-speed system lets each level call for what it needs. In some houses a separate small system or ductless heads for the lower level is simpler than zoning the old ductwork.

Sometimes, but it's rarely the easiest route. A furnace needs a dry, accessible spot and duct runs to each room, and a shallow crawlspace makes both hard. If the crawlspace is sealed and insulated, a horizontal furnace or air handler can go there. More often, ductless heat pumps handle the cabin, with electric baseboard or a small direct-vent gas heater kept as backup for the coldest nights.

MVEC ties its air-source heat pump rebate to a metered off-peak connection. In practice that usually means the heat pump sits on a separately metered circuit billed at a lower rate, and the co-op can interrupt it during peak demand, so the house needs backup heat that runs on its own, such as a gas furnace. Wiring and meter details come from MVEC, so call them before we quote the job.
