Why does my newer Rosemount house have an air exchanger, and can I turn it off?
New Minnesota homes are built tight enough that the state energy code requires mechanical ventilation, and an air exchanger (HRV or ERV) is the usual way to provide it. It brings in fresh air and sends stale, moist air out while recovering much of the heat. Turning it off lets humidity, odors and indoor pollutants build up and can lead to window condensation in winter. Keep its filters and cores clean instead.
The PVC pipes on the side of our Rosemount house frosted over and the furnace shut down. What happened?
A high-efficiency furnace pushes warm, wet exhaust out a PVC pipe, and in deep cold that moisture can freeze at the termination, or wind can drift snow over the intake. The furnace's pressure switch then shuts it down to stay safe. Clear snow and frost from both pipes carefully and try again. If it keeps happening, the termination may need to be raised or moved, which we can do.
