On a condensing furnace, the pressure switch confirms the inducer is pulling exhaust out through the PVC vent. Strong gusts across or into the termination can upset that draft long enough to open the switch, and the furnace locks out for a while. Frost or snow partly blocking the pipe makes it worse. We check the termination style, pipe length and switch readings, and sometimes the fix is a different vent kit or a relocated termination.
The blower in our south Blaine rambler's furnace hums but doesn't spin. Is that fixable?
Usually. On older furnaces with a PSC blower motor, a humming motor that won't turn often has a failed run capacitor, which is an inexpensive part.
