Propane is usually one of the costlier ways to heat in Minnesota, and a cold-climate heat pump can carry the house through fall, spring and much of the winter, with the propane furnace taking over on the coldest days. The savings depend on your propane price and your electric rate, which varies with your provider here, so we run your actual numbers first.

For a building you heat only to keep water from freezing or to work in now and then, a vented propane or gas unit heater on a thermostat is simple and reliable. For a tack room or office where you want steady comfort and summer cooling, a ductless heat pump works well. Barns are dusty, so plan on more frequent filter changes and service than the house needs.

Extending a duct works when the basement runs under the addition and the furnace has capacity to spare. Often neither is true: additions sit on a crawlspace or slab, and the only route is a long run through unheated space. Then a ductless heat pump head heats and cools the addition on its own, and because it runs on electricity, it doesn't add to your propane use.

On, at a steady low setting well above freezing, never off. Shut off and drain water lines that run through the crawlspace or outside walls, and install a Wi-Fi thermostat that sends a low-temperature alert to your phone. Have the furnace serviced before you leave in fall, since a failed igniter in January can go unnoticed for days, and make sure the propane tank is full if the place runs on propane.
