Day & Night in Carrier's ICP family
Day & Night is one of seven brands International Comfort Products lists on its website, next to Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Arcoaire, KeepRite and AirQuest. ICP says it is part of Carrier Global Corporation, and as of 2026 the Day & Night website still signs off with "A Carrier Company." ICP sells each of its brands through local heating and cooling contractors, so which badge ended up in your basement usually comes down to who installed it.
For repairs, the family resemblance is the useful part. Day & Night gas furnaces carry the same model numbers as Heil and Comfortmaker: G for the Ion and QuietComfort tiers, N for Performance. The igniter, flame sensor or pressure switch your furnace needs is the same part a Heil owner's technician orders, and our Heil service page covers more of that shared hardware. When you read the rating plate, treat the digits as an efficiency class, not an exact rating: Day & Night lists the Ion 97 (G97CTN) at up to 96.7% AFUE. SmartSense and the Ion Gray thermostat
Newer Day & Night systems can report on themselves. SmartSense puts sensors in SmartSense-enabled outdoor units, and they send data to the Ion Gray Smart Thermostat. With the homeowner's opt-in, the dealer can review that data and the fault codes remotely, so the technician shows up knowing what failed.
Two practical notes. First, the data goes to the dealer you opted in with, usually the company that installed the system. If you'd rather have us come out, tell us what the thermostat has been reporting, and we confirm the fault at the equipment with a meter before anything gets replaced. Second, remote data doesn't fix anything by itself. A weak capacitor or a frozen condensate line still needs hands on the unit.
How cold can a Day & Night heat pump keep heating?
Day & Night's top heat pump is the Ion 23 (5H3V), a variable-speed unit that runs anywhere from 20% to 100% of capacity in 1% steps and uses R-454B refrigerant. Day & Night rates it for heating operation down to -13°F. Below the Ion tier, the QuietComfort 19 and Performance 19 heat pumps are also variable-speed, and the Performance heat pumps are listed as dual-fuel capable with a compatible furnace and thermostat.
Minus 13 covers most of a Minnesota heating season, but we still get nights at -20°F, and every heat pump puts out less heat as the air gets colder. So we set these up as dual fuel. The heat pump carries fall, spring and the milder stretches of winter, and the gas furnace takes over once it's cold enough that gas is the better buy. Expect defrost cycles too: on a raw 25°F day, a heat pump that stops heating for a few minutes and sends up a cloud of steam is working normally.
Does Day & Night still make oil furnaces?
Day & Night still lists oil furnaces, including lowboy models (the OLV, OLR and OLF) with short cabinets and upright models such as the OMV and OMF. Oil heat is uncommon around the Twin Cities, but it still turns up in farmhouses and rural homes that never got a gas line.
An oil furnace fails differently from a gas one. When it won't start or runs rough and smoky, the usual suspects are the burner nozzle, the oil filter, the ignition electrodes and the cad cell that proves the flame, followed by a combustion test once it's running again. What does the Day & Night warranty cover?
Day & Night gives the original owner a 10-year parts limited warranty on new equipment registered within 90 days of installation; miss that and the term is 5 years. Its No Hassle Replacement coverage, which replaces the unit if the compressor, coil or heat exchanger fails, runs 10 years on top-of-the-line products, 5 on mid-tier, 1 or 3 on standard models and not at all on entry-level ones. On a split system it also requires a Day & Night indoor coil or fan coil, plus written approval from the local distributor. If you bought the house with the system in it, assume the registered terms may not have carried over.
When a Day & Night is done, we size the replacement with a Manual J load calculation rather than copying the old nameplate. Installed furnaces run $4,500–$9,500 and heat pumps $7,500–$14,500, and installs carry our 2-year labor warranty on top of the manufacturer's parts warranty.

Should I replace my Day & Night oil furnace with a gas one?
If natural gas now reaches your road, it's worth pricing. Oil heat is uncommon around the Twin Cities, and a conversion usually means a new gas service line and meter, new venting and removing the oil tank, so it costs more than a straight swap. If gas isn't coming, a new oil furnace, propane or a heat pump with backup heat are the realistic options.
