Who makes Tempstar furnaces?
Tempstar is one of three brands built by International Comfort Products, the Carrier Global division that also makes Heil and Comfortmaker. The three share factories, tier names and a lot of parts. What differs is mostly the badge and which contractors sell it. If you've read our Heil service page, most of the hardware story carries over.
That shared parentage is the practical reason Tempstar is easy to keep running. Inducer motors, igniters, flame sensors and pressure switches are common across the ICP family, so a no-heat call on a Tempstar often ends on the first trip.
Reading a Tempstar model number
Tempstar splits its equipment into three tiers, and the model number usually tells you which one you have before anyone opens a panel.

The digits after the letter mark the efficiency class. An 80 is a mid-efficiency furnace that vents into a metal flue or chimney. A 92 through 97 is a condensing furnace with PVC vent pipes and a condensate drain. Knowing which one you have tells us whether a winter lockout is more likely a flue problem or a frozen drain, and which parts to put on the truck.
What goes wrong with Tempstar furnaces in a Minnesota cold snap?
The condensing Tempstar furnaces run into the same trouble every condensing furnace does when it's twenty below. Exhaust vapor freezes at the vent termination on the side of the house, or the condensate line freezes where it runs along an outside wall, and the pressure switch shuts the furnace down to protect it. The other common winter call is a furnace that runs for a few minutes and then quits while the blower keeps going. That's often the high-limit switch doing its job because the furnace is overheating, usually from a clogged filter or closed-off returns. Our explainer on the furnace limit switch goes through it. A limit that keeps tripping with a clean filter needs a technician, because the cause can be a failing blower or, on an older furnace, a heat exchanger problem.
What is a Tempstar Ion system?
An Ion system is a matched set: an Ion furnace or air handler, an Ion outdoor unit and the Ion Black System Control on the wall. The control talks to both units and stores their faults, so we read that history before replacing a board. Swapping in a generic smart thermostat can cost you features the Ion equipment was bought for, so ask us first.
Tempstar heat pumps work in Minnesota as part of a dual-fuel setup. The heat pump handles spring, fall and mild winter stretches, and the gas furnace takes over when output falls off in the cold. Tempstar makes sense for a homeowner who wants Carrier-family engineering at a value price, and the Ion tier adds variable-speed blowers for buyers who want quieter, more even heat. Every replacement we quote starts with a Manual J load calculation. Installed furnaces run $4,500–$9,500 and central AC $5,200–$9,800, and installs carry our 2-year labor warranty on top of the manufacturer's parts warranty. Register new Tempstar equipment soon after the install, because the longer parts coverage depends on it; your certificate lists the window.

Are Tempstar and Heil the same furnace?
Very close. Both are built by International Comfort Products, Carrier's ICP division, along with Comfortmaker, and they share tier names (Ion, QuietComfort and Performance) and many parts. The badge and the dealer network differ more than the hardware does. For repairs that's useful: a part stocked for a Heil often fits the Tempstar of the same family, and we confirm by model number.
What does the letter at the start of my Tempstar model number mean?
On current Tempstar furnaces, Performance models start with N and the Ion and QuietComfort models start with F. The digits that follow give the efficiency class, such as 80 or 96. It's the fastest way to tell a basic single-stage furnace from a variable-speed Ion unit before we arrive, so a photo of the rating plate helps.
What is the Tempstar No Hassle Replacement warranty?
On qualifying Tempstar products, it replaces the whole unit, rather than repairing it, if certain major components fail during the covered period. Which products qualify and for how long depends on the model and tier, so check the certificate that came with your system. Registration and install paperwork matter, so keep both where you can find them.
Can a Tempstar heat pump heat my house in January?
Not by itself on the coldest nights. A heat pump's output drops as the outdoor temperature falls, and Minnesota regularly goes well below zero. We pair a Tempstar heat pump with a gas furnace as a dual-fuel system, or with electric backup heat, so the heat pump carries the mild weather and the backup covers the deep cold.
