Is Heil the same as Tempstar and Comfortmaker?
Heil is one of three closely related brands built by International Comfort Products, a division of Carrier Global. ICP's other two are Tempstar and Comfortmaker, and the three share factories, components and many part numbers. The differences between them are mostly the badge and the dealers who sell them. Carrier and Bryant are separate brands under the same parent, with their own engineering lines and price points.
That matters when your Heil breaks. Because ICP parts serve three brands, the common repair parts are easy to source, and a Heil furnace is rarely stuck waiting on something exotic.
Ion, QuietComfort and Performance
Heil sorts its equipment into three lines. Ion is the premium tier, with communicating furnaces, variable-speed blowers and the Ion wall control. QuietComfort is the standard line, including condensing furnaces that Heil rates up to 96% AFUE. Performance is the budget line of single-stage furnaces and basic condensers.
You can usually tell which one you have from the furnace model number on the rating plate. Current Ion and QuietComfort furnaces start with G (G97, G96, G80 and so on), while Performance furnaces start with N. The number after the letter hints at efficiency: 80 is a non-condensing furnace on a metal flue, and 92 through 97 are condensing furnaces vented in PVC.
Repairs we do on Heil equipment
Outside town gas lines, plenty of homes heat with propane, and Heil furnaces are no exception. A furnace switched from natural gas to LP needs the right conversion kit, and the gas pressure at the valve has to be set for propane. When a propane Heil lights rough, rolls flame or keeps locking out, we check the kit and measure manifold pressure before replacing parts. The rest of the list looks like any modern furnace. On condensing models, pressure switches and inducer motors are the usual suspects when the furnace won't fire in deep cold, often because the side-wall vent frosted over or the condensate drain froze. Heil's selling point on qualifying products is the No Hassle Replacement Limited Warranty. If the compressor, coil or heat exchanger fails within the covered period, Heil provides a replacement unit instead of a repaired part. The length depends on the product tier, with the longest coverage on top-of-the-line equipment.
Separately, Heil's current terms give a 10-year parts limited warranty when new equipment is registered within 90 days of installation, and five years if it isn't. Is a Heil a good choice for a replacement?
Heil makes sense when you want a sound, value-priced system without paying for a premium badge. A QuietComfort condensing furnace fits most Minnesota homes on natural gas, and the Performance line works for rentals or tight budgets.
